Keep Your Pipes from Freezing This Winter with These Tips

February 18, 2019

Cold winter temperatures can cause your home’s water pipes to freeze and possibly burst. This can lead to flooding and severe damage to your house and belongings. Take preventative measures, but if you suspect a problem with your pipes, set up a plumbing inspection in Shreveport, LA right away. Below are six tips to keep your home’s water pipes from freezing in the winter:

  • Turn the heat on: Cold weather can affect pipes whether you are home most of the day or are away for long periods of time. For this reason, when the weather forecast predicts freezing temperatures for your area, be sure there’s heat moving constantly throughout the inside of your home. So, what’s the simplest way to prevent pipes from freezing and breaking? Turn the heating system on and leave it on. If this sounds like an expensive solution, know that it doesn’t have to be. Instead of blasting the heater day and night, set the thermostat to a comfortable temperature while you’re at home and lower it by 10 or 15 degrees while you’re away or asleep.
  • Let the faucet drip: If you run into frozen pipes every year, then you know which pipes are more susceptible to freezing. This winter, allow the faucet connected to the problem pipe to drip a bit. Leaving the faucet slightly open keeps pressure from building up and also relieves pressure in the plumbing system—it’s this pressure created between the faucet and the blockage that causes pipes to burst.
  • Seal up gaps: Seal any cracks, holes and other gaps that are near water pipes. This easy improvement can keep cold air from reaching the plumbing inside walls and floors and prevent cold air drafts from entering your house. Use a spray foam insulation or caulk to fill small gaps; seal holes on both the exterior and interior sides of the wall if you can.
  • Schedule an inspection: To be absolutely sure your pipes are not damaged, consider scheduling a professional plumbing inspection in Shreveport, LA before winter and another one after the cold weather has passed. An expert has the tools, knowledge and skills to properly inspect your water pipes and perform any needed repairs. If a pipe does burst, call an emergency plumber immediately.
  • Open interior doors: Many pipes are located in cabinets. When temperatures plummet, it’s a good idea to leave cabinet doors open so household heat can keep pipes warm. Also, keep interior doors open to allow heat to flow throughout the house.
  • Insulate or tape: It’s not unusual for water pipes in basements and attic spaces to not have proper insulation. These areas are more exposed that other areas of homes, so they may need extra insulation around them to keep from freezing. Check other pipe locations to ensure they too are insulated well. Easy solutions include foam rubber or fiberglass sleeves, but another option is to apply heating tape.
